Pilates Exercise

As part of Functional Rehabilitation, Pilates exercises target the body’s structural imbalances that contribute to chronic back pain.

Principles of pilates

Pilates is a fitness method created by Joseph Pilates, who originally referred to his approach as “Contrology.”

Later, instructors identified six core principles that form the foundation of every Pilates movement. These principles must be consistently applied to each exercise throughout the entire session.

Centering

Physically directing attention to the body’s center, specifically the powerhouse region between the lower ribs and the pubic bone.

Concentration

Focusing completely on the exercise and performing it with full commitment.

Control

Performing each Pilates exercise with purposeful intent and complete muscular control.

Precision

Maintaining awareness throughout each movement, ensuring proper placement, alignment relative to other body parts, and the correct trajectory for each body part.

Breath

Visualizing the lungs as bellows, powerfully driving air in and out of the body with full breaths.

Flow

Naturally, performing each exercise with fluidity, grace, and ease is a key objective, ensuring a seamless connection of energy throughout the entire body.

In conclusion, Pilates equipment, like the reformer, serves as an excellent reflection of one’s flow and concentration. If control and rhythm are lost, the movements can become abrupt and mechanical, highlighting the importance of maintaining smooth and deliberate motion.
