Dry Needling: An Alternative to Myofascial Release

Dry needling involves inserting thin needles into muscle trigger points to relieve pain.

What is dry needling?

Dry needling is an invasive technique designed to alleviate muscular tension and pain. Its effects are comparable to myofascial release, leading to pain reduction, decreased muscle tone, and improved function. Clients may choose dry needling as an alternative to manual therapy. At Nofrills Physiotherapy, we utilize various dry needling techniques tailored to individual needs. One approach we employ is the peristructural technique, which focuses on movement analysis and palpation.

Why should i try dry needling?

Effective: Dry needling offers quick results, making it ideal for those with limited time. Many patients experience increased range of motion after just one session, with relief from sore and tense muscles within 10-15 minutes—much faster than a traditional hour-long sports massage or myofascial release.

Safe & Comfortable: Our dry needling technique is designed for comfort, minimizing muscle twitching and bleeding during the session.

Personalized Treatment: Our trained therapists will assess the areas that could benefit from dry needling, focusing on functional problems like injuries or impairments. For example, if you have a hamstring strain, needling may be performed on your quads. The therapist will then sterilize the targeted area to ensure a safe and effective session.

How does dry needling differ from acupunture?

Acupuncture aims to relieve pain and discomfort by targeting the body’s Chi (or energy flow) to restore balance. In contrast, dry needling focuses on stimulating muscle or myofascial trigger points—specific areas in tense muscles that can induce pain. While both techniques use needles, their purposes and methodologies are distinct.

How does Dry Needling work?

The peristructural technique we employ focuses on transversely deforming tissues without disrupting or penetrating the dura or fascia. This approach helps down-regulate local tissue irritability and modify segmental neural signals. This distinguishes it from trigger point needling or acupuncture, which penetrate and overstimulate tissues.

Our trained therapists will assess which areas could benefit from dry needling, particularly those with functional problems such as injuries or impairments. For example, if you have a hamstring strain, the needling will be applied to your quads. The physiotherapist will then sterilize the targeted area to ensure a safe and effective session.

How can I sign up?

If you’re currently seeing us, just ask your physiotherapist if dry needling would be a good option for you. If you have an injury or a strained muscle and are interested in trying dry needling, feel free to give us a call, and we’ll get back to you shortly.
