Neck Pain Solutions: How Physiotherapy Can Help You Find Relief
Neck pain causes, symptoms, and treatment
What Is Neck Pain?
Neck pain often radiates beyond the neck itself, affecting the arms and other areas. Its origins can be complex and aren’t always localized to the neck. This condition is quite common, with most people experiencing it at least once in their lives. Factors range from poor posture, such as hunching over a laptop for extended periods, to injuries from accidents.
What Causes It?
Neck pain isn’t just about “my neck hurts”; it can manifest through various signs that extend beyond the neck itself.
Persistent headaches that start at your neck
You have a stiff neck, which can lead to a limited ability to move your head
Discomfort or pain from holding your head in the same position
Numbness, tingling, and spasm are also counted as “neck pain”
Did You Know Your Spine Can Cause Neck Pain?
Neck pain is more complex than it seems. Often, the cause of your discomfort lies deeper than you might expect. The spine, made up of 33 bones along with joints, ligaments, and muscles, plays a crucial role in supporting your body and facilitating movement. Importantly, the spine is interconnected with other parts of the body; issues in one area can impact another.
The human body functions as a linked system, where pain in one part can originate from another. For example, raising your arm involves not just the arm, but your entire body. An injury to the shoulder might lead to neck pain, as compensatory movements place extra strain on the neck. This interconnectedness highlights how pain can travel between areas, making it essential to look beyond the immediate source for effective treatment.
Looking For Neck Pain Treatment?
Neck pain is often more intricate than it appears. The source of your discomfort may be deeper than you realize. The spine, composed of 33 bones along with joints, ligaments, and muscles, is vital for supporting your body and enabling movement. Crucially, the spine is connected to other body parts; issues in one area can influence another.
The body operates as an interconnected system, meaning pain in one region can stem from another. For instance, raising your arm engages not just the arm, but your entire body. A shoulder injury may lead to neck pain due to compensatory movements that add strain to the neck. This interconnectedness underscores the importance of looking beyond the immediate source of pain for effective treatment.
Common Neck Pain Conditions that we treat
Identifying the causes of neck pain can be challenging, as the root of the problem isn’t always immediately obvious. This is why consulting a medical professional is essential for an accurate diagnosis. If you haven’t yet determined the cause of your discomfort, we invite you to visit us for a comprehensive assessment. Our team will work with you to uncover the underlying issue and guide you toward effective treatment.

Cervicogenic Headaches
Most individuals experiencing neck pain report a deep, dull ache that extends from the base of the skull to the top of the head, typically affecting one side. If neck pain and stiffness are present on both sides, the discomfort may also be bilateral. Other common symptoms include a feeling of pressure behind the eyes and discomfort in the jaw.
Additionally, tenderness in the area of the cervical spine just beneath the skull can further confirm the diagnosis. Interestingly, some sufferers may find temporary relief from their headache when pressure is applied for an extended period.
Whiplash Neck Pain That Results From Injury
Whiplash is a type of neck injury caused by a sudden acceleration-deceleration force that moves the head backward, forward, or sideways. This rapid and unrestrained movement often occurs during car accidents. The force causes the head to flex forward quickly (in a downward position) and then whip back rapidly into extension (looking up), resulting in strain and discomfort in the neck.
Cervical Spondylosis Symptoms
Spondylosis (pronounced spon-di-lo-sis) is a degenerative condition that impacts the vertebral joints of the spine. It is known as Cervical Spondylosis when it affects the neck and Lumbar Spondylosis when it involves the lower back. This condition primarily arises from the wear and tear of bones and cartilage, resulting in a narrowing of the space between the spinal vertebrae. This narrowing can lead to pain and numbness by compressing the nerve roots emerging from the spine. Depending on which nerve root is impacted, individuals may experience pain radiating down their arms or legs.
Muscle Strains
A muscle strain is an injury affecting either a muscle or a tendon, which is the fibrous tissue connecting muscles to bones. Minor strains may simply overstretch the muscle or tendon, while more severe cases can involve partial or complete tears in these tissues.
Worn Joints
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent type of arthritis, often referred to as degenerative joint disease or “wear and tear” arthritis. It primarily affects the hands, hips, and knees. In OA, the cartilage within a joint starts to deteriorate, leading to changes in the underlying bone.
