Cervical Nerve Impingement

Cervical nerve impingement, or cervical radiculopathy, occurs when a nerve root in the cervical spine is compressed or irritated.

Shooting Pains Down the Arms

Due to the nerve supply’s nature, issues in the neck can lead to symptoms felt further down the arm, as these nerves are responsible for both motor strength and sensation in the hands.

Patients often describe common radiating symptoms as “shooting pain,” “pulling pain,” or a “tingling sensation.” In more severe cases, individuals may experience weakness on the affected side.

The primary causes of nerve impingement include degeneration and disc herniation. As we age, intervertebral discs lose water content, narrowing the space between vertebral bodies and putting pressure on the nerves.

Additionally, increased pressure on the facet joints can cause joint enlargement or the formation of bone spurs, further impinging on the nerves as they exit the foraminal canal.

Poor control of the neck can lead to increased pressure on the discs, especially with unusual neck postures. Over time, excessive load on the disc may cause the annulus (the outer covering of the disc) to rupture, resulting in the contents of the disc spilling out.

This condition is known as a disc herniation. When this occurs, the disc material can irritate nearby nerves or reduce the space within the foraminal canal, leading to further complications.

For dedicated runners and athletes, the prospect of a knee injury can be daunting. Many may turn to knee braces to ease discomfort and pain, as they help reduce swelling, provide support, and alleviate soreness.

However, if you suspect an injury and are experiencing knee pain, it’s crucial to consult a doctor or physiotherapist. While knee braces can assist with daily activities and sports, they offer only temporary relief. Ignoring the issue could lead to worsening conditions.

A physiotherapist can identify the underlying cause of your pain and create a personalized treatment plan. At Core Concepts, our goal is to help you achieve lasting relief with as few sessions as possible.
